what is the difference between a UV and a skylight camera filter???
looking to buy a filter for my new 17-70mm lens, mainly for protection. what is the the best type of filter to use for all round use???
If you are never going to shoot film, then the UV is just fine, it cuts out a little of the haze sometimes found when shooting landscapes.
The skylight is designed for photographers who shoot chromes. There is a tendency for the film to go just a little cooler than the actual scene when shooting outdoors, so magazine and other photographers working with transparency film used skylight filters on the lenses which doubled as protection for the front element of their lenses.
Since I shoot both 35mm chromes and digital using my DSLR, I have skylight filters on all my lenses. The WB feature on the DSLR is used when shooting with incandescent or fluorescent lighting.
There is usually no difference in cost.
