Lens Set Nikon

how can i set my Nikon D40 with an 18-70mm lens to take action photos? or is it possible?
I am a beginner. I know it is going to affect the quality in choosing the shutter speed, what is the best possible shutter speed value i can use take a picture of my brother playing basketball. ( i just want to take a picture of the ball in action, not him. lolz! ^_^ )
I would use the shutter priority mode, where you pick the shutter speed and the camera will adjust the aperture for you. Keep an eye on your meter, if the light become too low for your chosen shutter speed then the meter will warn you that if is unable to go to a workable aperture and you need to lower the shutter speed more to help get a good exposure. Also, it will be helpful to go to a higher ISO setting.
Get to the gym a few minutes early and point the camera around and get your camera set, Shutter Priority "S" Mode, get some light readings, you very likely will be setting your camera up to 1600 ISO.
Below I added a link to a web page on Nikon's website that will provide links so that you can download the D40 camera manual if you need it.
Hope this helps.
