Lens Unit Photo
I need help with photos.?

I have recently started taking pictures at a local dirt track. I use a digital rebel xti and a sigma DG 70-300 f/4-5.6 lens. As the day gets darker into the night I notice that the lens has a hard time autofocusing. So my question is do I need a better lens to catch the fast action of the cars as its gets darker out. Or do I need a really good flash unit to help keep the photos from becoming blurry. I'm new to the photography world so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

A flash would only be effective for about 50 feet and that's if it's a really super flash and if you were shooting at a higher ISO, so that's not the answer.

Since most of the action at the track takes place at a predictible distance from you, you might try manual focusing. Once you set it for the action in one place, it will remain the same as long as you are shooting in that place. Also, once you get the hang of it, you will get better at both tracking the action AND refocusing as you do. You will learn just how much to turn the focus ring as you pan to keep the subject in pretty good focus without a bunch of hunting around.

If you are at the long end of your zoom, your maximum aperture will be f/5.6, so that's kind of slow for capturing fast action. Of course, this has to be in the budget, but maybe it's time to step up to a faster lens. If you are close enough to the action, as I imagine a local dirt track doesn't have a 50 row stadium around it, you might only need up to 200mm. This would let you shop for a larger aperture lens without spending $1,000 or more. Unless you are ready to step up to the plate and buy a fast Canon lens.

If you like Sigma, this looks kind of interesting.

There are only two reviews and the star total doesn't look that great, but read the reviews and you'll see that both users like the lens.

The users seem to like this Tokina quite a bit:

Now...

The Nikon version of this lens is on my wish list. This will cost twice as much as the Sigma or Tokina lens, but maybe it's worth it. Very cool lens...
