Life Camcorder Battery
Best HD camcorder, video quality, importing/uploading onto computer and batter life for $1000?

I am looking for a camcorder that can last hours, so i can record long events and trips. I want it to be in good quality even when in low lighting(do camcorders have lights?). I don't want to have to buy softwares for transferring the video onto my computer, however I have a macbook pro and I read somewhere that you don't need any softwares. Anyway what do you guys recommend?

As you probably tell, i do not have experience with these things, because i never had a camcorder, but i have a simple digital camera what can take pictures and videos, but not so good quality and the battery life is only about 70 minutes, so when I am walking around taking pictures, after a couple hours i have to charge it again. For the price i would like it range around $1000 but feel free to tell me about ones that are more or less my desired price. Also i would appreciate it if you can give me tips on ways to increase quality, the battery life, etc.

Canon HF S100 or HF S200 + optional high capacity batteries from Canon.

My Canon HF S100 with the Canon BP-819 gives up to about 6 hours record time. The memory cards get a bit pricey, but copying off the MTS video data files to a Canon DX-100 helps...

The Sony HDR-CX550 is more $, but worth investigating.

Consumer-grade camcorders have small lenses and imaging chips. The S100/S200 (and CX550) are actually "medium-sized". If "low light" performance is needed, you won't find that in a consumer camcorder - expect to spend over $2,000 for larger lenses and larger 3-chip imaging chip array.

You have two options - use a video light or get the Sony with built-in infrared emitter that allows monochrome capture ("NightShot" or "SuperNightShot").

You MacBook Pro came with iMovie. That is part of the iLife suite of applications (iPhoto, GarageBand, iDVD and others). The version iMovie needs to be '08 or newer to be able to handle AVCHD-compressed MTS files. FinalCut Express is LOTS more powerful and also works well with AVCHD compressed MTS files. Since we don't know which version OSX or iMovie you are using, we have no way to know if the requirements to deal with AVCHD/MTS files are met in your computing environment.
