Light Macro Flash

No hassle macro (and basic filters)?
I'm looking for a true macro lens that can function well without a flash or a tripod. I have a Canon 40D and am thinking about the 100 mm macro. Will the one without IS still work well without all the extra gear provided I have some good natural light? Do you have any suggestions on a different lens that might be better?
I'm also considering a protective filter that will keep my new lens safe from scratches and stuff without distorting the image. Any suggustions?

The 100 mm macro is an excellent lens.
When shooting macros, usually the macro image ratio is set first (1:1, 1:2 or other) and then the camera is move in or out in order to bring the subject into focus. If you need greater depth of field, you will need to use a tripod, since the shutter speed will be far too low to hand hold
Macro lenses have their front elements recessed, so it is not normally necessary to use a UV filter to protect it from unwanted attention that could scratch it.
