What Macro Lens should I buy?
I own a Konica Minolta Maxxum 4 SLR 35mm camera. I don't know much about the lenses but want to get that 5x magnification for shooting insects. Is a Extension Tube required and what type? What am I supposed to get?
Here are some lenses for this camera but I don't know which one would give me the 5x zoom
MACRO LENSES
* AF 50mm f/2.8 Macro(D)
* AF 50mm f/3.5 Macro
* AF 100mm f/2.8 Macro(D)
* AF 200mm f/4 Macro Apo G
* AF Macro Zoom 3X -1X f/1.7-2.8
I want to photograph an ant so I can see all the fine details.
An extension tube is an alternative to a macro lens. A macro lens is better because the lens is designed for close-up work. An extension tube might be cheaper. It just allows your existing lens to focus closer.
I would say f2.8 is better than f3.5, but the difference is not much, only half a stop. At macro settings you don't have as much depth of field, so wide open f-stops are harder to use anyway.
A longer macro lens is nicer because you don't have to get up as close, but it means you have to hold the camera that much steadier because it magnifies 'camera shake'. (In fact it's nice to have a tripod anyway with a macro lens.)
Otherwise I'd say generally more expensive is better. So it gets to be a matter of how much you want to spend.
