Nikon DSLR or Canon DSLR?
I am an amatuer photographer who is looking for a lightweight, fully manual DSLR. A friend has a Nikon D60 (I think) & really likes it but I prefer Canon. I am looking at purchasing a Canon EOS 1000D DSLR. Does anybody have either of these cameras and would be able to shed some light?
I would be taking it out to nightclubs (as I am hired as a club photographer) and then just for general use. I would consider a Pentax but my heart is set on a Canon. I currently have a 35mm Pentax SLR with Sigma lens.
Or if you could recommend a good Canon DSLR, looking to stay fairly close to $1000 price range. Any advice would help.
For the money I would take a serious look at the Canon Rebel T1i (500D). The T1i (about $900.00 for kit with 18-55mm lens) will offer more bang for the buck and has more features than the Nikon's. The T1i can also take HD videos up to 1080p. Take a look a the link below for a great review of the camera. The 18-55mm lens should be enough for what you want to do. If you find later that you need a lens with more focal length, you can purchase third party manufacturers lenses for a very reasonable price compared to OEM lenses. Another option is to purchase the body only ($720.00) and purchase a lens like the Tamron Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Lens for $290.00 with a $60.00 mail in rebate until the end of December. So for the T1i, $720.00 for the body and $230.00 for the Tamron lens, the total cost would be $950.00, just $50.00 more than the T1i kit with 18-55mm Canon lens. Since you mentioned nightclub work I would look into getting a nice prime lens with a low aperture like the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM for about $365.00. Even better would be the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM, but this lens cost about $1,460.00.
If you are not in a hurry and want to consider a Pentax (can use your existing lens), they have a new model coming out in October that is a relative bargain for its features. The K-x single-lens kit (featuring a Pentax DA L 18-55mm lens) will go for $649.95; two-lens editions adding a Pentax DA L 50-200mm zoom or Pentax DA L 55-300mm zoom lens will go for $749.95 and $849.95, respectively.
