Which lens will be a good replacement for a "kid lens"?
I am thinking of buying my first DSLR and learned that the lens is more important than the body. And since I am a student and cant afford both a good body and a good lens, im thinking of buying a cheap "body only" DSLR and a good lens, that I can use also when purchasing a new DSLR body in a year or more. I will probably buy a Canon, Nikon or Sony body as I don't like the 4/3 format.
So which lens will you recommend me to buy? Been looking on the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC Macro. Is there anything better at that price?
Thanks
The inexpensive, light and compact kit lenses you make fun of have outstanding performance compared to the kit zooms that were available for a lot more money for film cameras just a few years ago. They can take great pictures, and are a genuine bargain. The 18-55mm Nikkor kit lens has MTF performance curves that are roughly equivalent to the Sigma except in the corners where the Sigma is quite soft by comparison, higher chromatic aberration (correctible in postprocessing and corrected automatically in some cameras), less vignetting, and equivalent distortion. The Sigma will give you an advantage shooting indoors in available light, particularly at the longer focal lengths where it has up to a 2-stop advantage over the kit Nikkor. Sigma does not have a great reputation for uniform quality from the factory, so I would check a newly purchased lens to make sure it focuses and performs satisfactorily throughout the zoom range.
Here are comparable reviews of the Sigma lens and the 18-55mm Nikkor kit lens from the same source:
The Sigma:

The kit Nikkor, non-VR:

You might consider getting a specialized lens for the type type of photography that particularly interests you after using the kit lens for a while to learn and explore.
In general, I think you will benefit a lot from picking a camera that is not the least expensive entry-level camera from each manufacturer. For example, the Nikon D5000 has a significantly better sensor system than the D3000, with about a one-stop advantage in low-light performance and significantly wider dynamic range that can contribute a lot to image quality. Here are comparisons of the D5000 with a recent Canon camera and the Nikon D3000. While the D5000 sensor performs better than the Canon on all factors these tests, which emphasize factors other than resolution, the Canon is likely to have higher resolution if your lens can deliver it.

You should get great enjoyment out of shooting with your first DSLR whatever camera and lens you decide to purchase. It's a great step up from a typical point-and-shoot camera. Good luck!
