Can you re-record over Mini-DV tapes?
I am using a Panasonic PV-DV203. I bought this 2 years ago. Hardly used. The problem is as follows:
1. I record two minutes on a new tape (that works).
2. I rewind and record another two minutes (that works too)
3. I rewind the tape and record another minute or two.
4. When I rewind, the counter does not go back. The screen is blue and remains so...
5. When I forward to a blank area, and record again. It seems to work ...
It did this from the first day. I couldn't take it back as I was abroad. Anyhow, two years down the line I took it to a repair shop who cleaned the head. I bought new Panasonic tapes and its doing the same as before.
Is this normal? Can't you re-record over recordings? Is something wrong with my Camcorder?

I don't know really. I record a bit to test. Then rewind to test another feature and so on. I plan to record my brother's show tomorrow!

Why are you rewinding and recording over the same 2 minutes repeatedly? That's asking for trouble.
Actually my Sony camcorder does something similar. When I go forward to a blang section of the tape, the counter does not work. I believe it is due to the fact the counter only counds recorded sections of tape. Blank sections do not count.
Try a new tape.
1) Record 2 minutes of something
2) Without rewinding, record another few minutes.
3) Continue step 2 until you reach the end of the tape
4) Rewind to the beginning
5) Playback the entire tape.
