Piece Filter Kit

new camera accessory?
I own a D80 with a sigma 18-200 lens. Lovely little piece of kit but recently I've wanted to start experimenting with longer exposures with things like water features, landscapes and maybe even night time photography...
I've had a look online and I didn't realise how many filters there are out there! I'd really appreciate a good place to start when buying filters for sunsets and sunrises, or just to help combat the obvious problem of using a long exposure during the day! Cheers
I hate to be a cop out but there are some genuinely informative points made here, and both the links to the vari-ND and star filter are going to be considered! Thanks everyone
You only need 3 filters with digital ND and Polarizer as has already been mentioned, but Graduated Grey filters will hold back a bright sky and stop it being the usual burnt out white sky you often get with digital, owing to the limed tonal range that most sensors have.
All 'effects' filters such as starburst, sunset, tobacco etc.. are best done in post processing.
Blurring backgrounds is best done in camera, but for that you need a wide aperture, preferably long, lens. It can be done in Photoshop etc., but its a pain to select every hair in a subject, which you don't want blurred, to then blur the background.
I never use a 'protection' filter for two good reasons, first is any filter can't improve the lens quality and usually deteriorates the image to some degree. And, most importantly, they don't work as protection, the thin filter glass is far more prone to shattering and scratching the lens coating (which will ruin the lens) than the lens itself, the best protection is in the lens hood which physically protects the lens from any blow from the side. This happened to me early in my photographic career some 40 years ago, since then I have never fitted a 'protection' filter, I have, of course, bashed my lenses in the moray of a press scramble more times than I care to remember, but the lenses have always kept working even with the inevitable dings you get in that situation.
Using a filter for protection is one of those things that seem obvious, but in practice the reverse is true, they can actually 'kill' a lens.
