What controls the shape of the sun in a photograph?
I saw a TV show where in one scene there was a clear view of the sun. It appeared as a six pointed star - not sharp points - very spread, but there was no question there were six arms. What sort of lens or filter would achieve this? Is it possible to control how the sun appears in your photos?

See how wide the arms of the sun are. Could the star-cross filter produce this?
Star cross filter is what you are referring to. It can come in various "points". I used to use a piece of soft window screening pressed to the lens to get the same effect.
