What maintainance is required for my new Nikon D60?
I recently purchaced my first dSLR - a Nikon D60.
I quickly realized that the maintainance (specifically cleaning) required for a dSLR is MUCH more than a point-and-shoot.
I usually cleam the rear element, and UV filter by spraying some ROR (lens cleaner) onto a lens tissue and wiping it in circular motions around the lens or filter. I then wait about 3 of 4 seconds for it to dry...
But my main concern is how to clean the internal components of the camera such as the mirror chamber, the mirror, but most importantly, the sensor.
I assume that the mirror and mirror chamber would not be to hard to clean, but my main concern is the sensor...
I know that the sensor is extremely delicate and can be dammaged or smudged very easily.
What (inexpensive) product(s) would you recomend for this purpose.
I suggest a thorough READING & STUDYING of the Owner's Manual for your camera. There is a section titled "Care and Cleaning" or something similar. It contains everything you need to know about owner-performed maintenance.
If you avoid changing lenses in dusty, windy conditions your sensor shouldn't get dirty. If it does, take it to a real camera shop and ask them to demonstrate one of the numerous sensor cleaning kits available. Then buy the kit.
DO NOT touch the mirror. It is a front surface mirror and rather delicate. Use a squeeze type blower to gently remove any dust particles - just DO NOT touch the mirror itself. Since dust on a mirror doesn't affect image quality its better to just ignore it unless its really annoying.
If anyone comes along and suggests using canned air (like you'd use on your keyboard) IGNORE them and give them a Thumbs Down. Using compressed air inside a camera can damage the shutter, the sensor and drive dust deeper into the inner workings of your camera where it can really do harm.
