Beginner DSLR Kit - Custom?
Alright, so I'm looking to put together my own kit for around 700 dollars to start off my photography kick =] If any of you guys could put together the perfect starter kit using KEH and BandH(split whatever way), what would you get?
There are SO many options I can't decide. I'm looking for more towards landscape and macro photography at the moment.
What would be your perfect kit for around 700 dollars? Including uv(however many dependent on lenses), and a polarized filter, + a memory card.
GOGO
Being more descriptive would help... I'm talking what equipment would you get? Brand/model? Lenses?
Although Nikon and Canon are the usual Pavlovian response, there are viable alternatives.
Sony A200, 10.2mp, w/18-70mm lens, $499.99 at B&H.
The A200 has Sony's version of Image Stabilization (IS, called Super Steady Shot by Sony) in the camera body. Therefore, any lens used will become an IS lens. The A200 can use every Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985 as well as the later Konica-Minolta branded AF lenses (made for the K-M 5D and 7D DSLR cameras) plus the current Sony branded lenses and the Carl Zeiss ZA lenses. So you could buy a 20 year old Maxxum AF lenses and it will autofocus with the A200 and be an IS lens.
Sony A300, 10.2mp w/18-70mm lens, $599.99 at B&H.
Same features as the A200 except the A300 adds Live View which actually works with the AF. The screen flips up or down so if you're doing ground level photography just flip it up, compose and shoot. Or, if you're in a crowd and have to hold the camera overhead to fet a picture just flip it down, compose and shoot.
Pentax K200D, 10.2mp w/18-55mm lens, $566.95 at B&H.
Pentax also has their version of IS in the camera body. Since the K200D still uses the Pentax K-mount introduced around 1975, every K-mount lens ever made can be used with it. Yes, there will be limitations when using a 30 year old manual focus lens but it can be used and it becomes an IS lens.
Nikon and Canon have their versions of IS in some of their lenses but not in all of them. Sure, you can use a Nikon lense from 30 years ago but it won't have IS. Same with Canon as long as its an EF mount but it too will not have IS.
Nikon has announced that the three year old D40 is being discontinued. After three years it was old technology.
Regardless of which kit you buy, buy a UV/Haze or Skylight filter to protect the front element of your lens and a circular polarizer to darken a blue sky and remove glare/reflections from glass, sand, water, snow and painted metal - but not polished metal. Buy a lens cleaning cloth when you buy your filters. Do NOT waste money on cheap filters. Buy QUALITY - B+W, Hoya, Heliopan, Tiffen, Singh-Ray.
Buy a tripod. Benro has a new line, the "Travel Angel" series.
A-069M8 w/BH-00 ballhead, supports 4.4 pounds, $140.00 at B&H.
A-169M8 w/BH-0 ballhead, supports 8.8 pounds, $166.95 at B&H.
I strongly suggest using your new camera with the lens that comes with it for at least 3 months before even thinking about additional lenses. That gives you time to decide where your main photographic interests lie. If you get into macro photography then you can begin saving for a true macro lens. If you decide that sports/wildlife are more interesting then you can begin saving for a 70-300mm zoom. If you decide that sweeping landscapes are your favorite then you can begin saving for an ultra wide angle.
