Sigma 70-300mm w/macro lens....why the macro?
I have a new Sigma 70-300mm zoom with the option to switch it to a macro lens if the focal length is set to 200-300mm. I have it on a Canon 50D and for the life of me I can not tell the difference between a macro and a non-macro picture taken? What am I missing here? Can someone give me an idea of the "ideal situation to use a macro lens at 200mm focal length?
I shoot primarily pro football and baseball with some wildlife and the occasional landscape. Why did I think this lens was a good idea?
Well, the macro setting lets you focus on things that are closer than the typical focus range of that kind of zoom.

In normal mode, you have to be atleast 59.1 inches away from your focus point. In macro, you can focus on something that is only 37.4 inches away from you.
If you are not taking pictures of anything that close to you, you probably wouldnt notice much of a difference. The ideal situation for macro would be any subject that is less than 60 inches away from your camera. I use macro often, and I like to get up close to flowers, and other subjects to capture the texture of the image. I also like that I can turn something very small i real life, into a HUGE picture with the zoom and macro setting.
