Nikon D90 or D300s, what camera gives you the most bang for your buck?
I am a Journalism student I started out with the Nikon D60, but now I am finding that I am really enjoying photo-journalism. I have also been experimenting with HDR photography, and for those that are into photography when I say HDR with a D60 is a pain in the ass you know what I am talking about.
My question is I want to upgrade my camera. Since I am a student, and paying my way through college I can afford around $2000. I am thinking either getting 2 D90’s so I have one with my wide angle lens, and the other for my telephoto lens. Or a D300s for my telephoto lens, and keep my D60 for the back up mount.
I mainly shoot sports for now, but I am interested in getting into wild-life photography when I finish with my Masters. Also I believe the 300s has AEB for HDR photo’s, but I am not sure if the D90 does.
So I guess I am looking for suggestions from the pro’s…
Definitely the D90 would give the best value. Right now you can pick it up for as low as $675 if you look carefully. I would probably get one D90, keep the D60 and use the remaining balance on high quality lenses. The reason is that the value of quality lenses usually stay fairly constant while the price of cameras tends to fall fast after two years. Also I am sure that the price of Full frame and even medium format cameras will start to fall to a more reasonable level within two years or so. It would not surprise me if the D300 fell to $500 within two years. Technology just moves so fast these days.
Invest in the lenses, cameras are secondary.
