Furnace causing power surge; interrupts WiFi and resets USB devices. How do I solve this problem?
When the furnace blower turns on, some kind of voltage spike jolts my electronic devices, and causes all these problems: my wi-fi connection gets reset, my USB mouse turns off and reconnects, my coaxial digital audio connection to my receiver loses sync and reconnects. I want to fix the problem and not just the symptoms - so is there anything I can do besides getting filtered surge protectors?
It might not be a power surge, it may be a power drain. When the furnace turns on it is drawing a large amount of electricity from the circuit and possibly the rest of the house.
Check to see if they're on the same circuit (if you go to the circuit breaker or fuse box and turn it off, do the furnace and your electronic devices turn off?). If so, then try moving them to a different circuit (different outlet in the house that is still on). If they aren't on the same circuit, then your best bet is to get some kind of UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply), which will automatically provide battery power any time your power dips or shuts off.
