What's the correct setting for Nikon D5000 when using reverse kit lens?

I bought a reverse kit lens adapter for my Nikon D5000 so I could do macro shots but even with the adapter, the camera says NO LENS ATTACHED. It switched to manual focus and truned VR off but it's still the same.

A d5000 will only work with a reversed lens in full manual mode (the m on the top dial).

Even then, a modern kitzoom will be very trick to handle since it lacks an aperture ring. If you're serious try to find an old manual focus lens, a 50mm e-series for eample.
