Screw Mount Petal

Can you use a screw mount lens hood with wide angle lens?
I have a Canon 7d with a 16-35mm lens. I love to use a Circular Polarizer on this lens, however to turn it, you have to awkwardly reach around the petal shaped lens hood. Would a screw in lens hood work for this problem? Would there be vignetting? Would a non petal shaped lens hood even help?
Thanks for the info everyone!
Yes, there are lens hoods designed for wide angle lens, (I'm talking about the rubber screw on type hoods). They are just not as deep as a hood for a normal lens.
Another thing you can do if you worry about vignetting is use a step up adaptor and a filter and hood larger than your lens size. So for example, if you lens filter size is 72mm, you could get a 72 to 77 step up adaptor and use a 77mm filter and hood.
Screwing the rubber hood into the polarizer filter is a big aid. It is so much easier to simply turn the hood to adjust the filter.
One thing to be mindful of though. Using a polarizer filter on a wide angle lens is not always a good idea. If there are vast areas of sky in your photo, you will very likely have ugly "banding" in sky areas of the photo because the polarizer filter does not polarize an area as great as the lens covers. I have found this out the hard way, and now seldom, if ever, use a polarizer filter with a wide angle lens.
