how to winterize minihome (mobile home)?
This is our first full winter we are going to be spending here. It is a minihome, made in the 90`s. We did alot of renovations over the spring and summer.
I was just wondering what types of things I can do to save on the power bill this winter & keep it warm without sky rocketing my heating bill.
We already plan to get the window kits to seal up our windows. Our minihome is up on a skirt, what are some easy ways that I can insulate inside the skirt?
Any tips at all would be greatly appreciated as I need to get to work on this asap!
Most of the skirting jobs I've seen on mobile homes have a U channel nailed into the ground with these 6" - 8" spikes, then the plastic skirting panels inserted into these channels and snapped up under an overhanging plastic lock on the top end. This makes for a really difficult removal of any panel to allow access to the underside. I set up several m. homes in the late 70's with a different type of skirting setup, basically a 2x4 frame, screwed up into the mobile home and held in place on the base by cutting the vertical studs 1/4" too long and forcing them in. That provides a good amount of tension on the frame holding it tight to the ground or pad, whichever it's setting on and provides you with a good frame onto which you can nail or screw this 1/2" - 7/8" rigid foam insulation and either a nice design plywood panel or metal if you so desire. Also, it's easy to make a panel opening between a few studs so it opens up for underside access. It will take some lumber and some work, but it will last as long as the mobile home and provide good insulation for the pipes underneath as well.
