I got an aquarium at goodwill with a stand and hood but how to clean it?
Its a ten gallon tank and im so happy i got it for 40 bucks. The light bulb is old and like cyllinder shaped but how do i remove it? There are vents above the light section of the hood and theres dust in the vents so how do i clean that? Oh and the tank kinda wobbles on the metal stand so can i put a rubber mat underneath the tank so it wont slip off? Are regent filters good? It came with a dusty one but i wanna use my tetra filter i already have for my existing betta tank. But that tank is not cycled because i only turn it on once in a while to get rid of debris, not chemicals. Should i cycle my new tank properly with the new regent filter or what? Thanks! How exciting! I have found the best way is to gently scrub your tank out with a mixture of salt and warm water. The salt is enough to kill off anything nasty that might be lurking in there. DO NOT use any chemicals on the inside! This includes dish soap, hand soap, windex, etc. If you have lime-scale or algae gunk it can be easily scraped off using a razor blade. Rinse it well and dry it with a clean towel. To remove lime-scale from plastic pieces, such as the hood, soak in vinegar or put towels soaked with vinegar over the lime-scale. Let it sit for an hour and it should soften and come right off. Rinse it well!
For dust you can use a vaccume hose and a soft brush.
As for cycling, most of the bacteria lives in your filter. Your filter should be running 24 hours a day, not once in a while for this reason. Without water flow, the bacteria suffocate. What do you have your betta in now? Is the Tetra filter big enough for your new tank? How often is "once in a while"? I think your best bet may be cycling the new tank with the regent filter, but make sure you place some media from your old filter to speed up the process. once the tank is cycled I would move the fish over to it and add the second (the tetra) filter. After a few weeks you can take off the regent filter, as you will have allowed bacteria to colonize in both.
Oh also, the stand shouldn't wobble once the tank is full. The stand for my 25 is the same way. However, keep in mind that a full 10 gallon tank weighs about 100 pounds, so make sure the stand is in good enough condition to support it.
