Help! I plug my Sony handy-cam into my imac and the computer freezes!!?

I have a Sony DCR-SR82. I have been able to plug my camera into my imac via USB fine for a while now, but just recently i plug my camera into the imac and a shade of grey comes down over the screen and a message saying to restart my computer comes up. EVERY TIME. Do i have a virus. Is it my camera problem, or is it the computers problem, this sorta thing has never happened to me before, i really need to transfer the videos to my computer by friday, i need help!!!

A virus? Unlikely, but anything is possible.

Have you repaired disc permissions using Disk utility?

Something changed from the last time you used it successfully and now - figure that out and we can work on "next steps". In the meantime, use the disc utility to repair permissions and verify the startup disc.
