Shoe Camera Flash

Why does my camera do this with an attached flash?
My NikonD5000 always takes pictures like this (only top half exposed) when I have flash on the hot shoe http://www.flickr.com/photos/blacob/5429107679/.
It does this with both Nikon and non-nikon flashes.
Because you are using a shutter speed that is faster than the flash sync speed of the camera.
Most are 1/200th second, some 1/250th second.
Look in your cameras user manual to see which shutter speed your camera syncs to flash
