Should I buy an slr camera instead of going to prom?
So I have a deal with my mother: She will pay for prom, or she will help me purchase an slr camera. Pros and cons:
Prom
•Pros: I like getting dressed up; It’s my senior year; memories; I earned a free ticket (so we only have to pay for my outfit and hair)
•Cons: I don’t want to go with someone, which means I’ll be going alone; I can only wear the dress once; I went last year and the dance itself was average
Camera
•Pro:I can use it for several years; I’ve been wanting a nice camera for a while now
•Cons: It’s expensive; I don’t have a legitimate use for it (it’s just for fun)
Is missing out on prom for a camera a good idea? Or will I regret missing the dance? Help me out?
How about making a deal with mom and buy a good used DSLR camera? Or even a demo that a camera store is selling? You can get a used Nikon D-200 and that is a great camera for less than $500.00. You may even be able to find something a bit more high end used. like a D-2.
People trade in cameras all the time for the latest model. I have a friend that went from a D-40, to a D-200, and now is using a D-300. All in a matter of 2 years! He doesn't even know what the AE-L button is used for, or how to change the metering from spot to area. But he wants the newest camera that there is. He just got a brand new Nikon SB-900 speedlight, and all of his flash photos are overexposed. There are a lot of people with the same mindset out there. So why not take a serious look at used?? If you are worried about the camera may have gotten wet, or used in the rain just look for a camera that is sealed.
You can look at the used listings from B&H or Adorama Camera on line, they are both large camera stores in NYC. Both offer a warranty on their used gear and the rate the item as either E+ for Excellent or Poor. B&H uses a 1-10 scale, with obviously 10 being the best.
I know a few girls that skipped their prom, and they always wound up regretting it. That is why today the new trend is to have "Adult Proms" I know because I shot 2 of them this summer. Mainly 35-45 year old men and women relieving the glory days.
