How do I know if a film SLR camera is in working condition?
It is a Minolta XG-M and there is currently no film inside it.
When I try to work the lever, there is no click sound.. is that because there is no film in it? or should it click even without any film?
Also, everything else about the camera seems normal and clean.
If you have the camera in-hand, simply test it out. The camera should have 2 LR44 batteries installed so that it's operable[1].
Open the back of the camera to reveal the film compartment by pulling up the film rewind knob. Cock the shutter by advancing the film lever. Note the motions of the sprocket, film take-up spool, and the shutter curtain. You should see all three components moving; the sprocket should rotate rightward, the spool should rotate leftward, and the shutter curtain should transit completely. When the camera is fully primed take the body cap off if there is one on it, hold the camera up to a bright source of light, and trip the shutter.
You should see a brief exposure through the shutter curtain—the duration of which is determined by the shutter speed. I'd test the camera at each of the speeds in this manner. Now, there's no real way to test the accuracy of the shutter timing by eye so just do so with your best judgement; the exposure should gradually increase as you incrementally decrease the shutter speed. When you reach bulb (denoted by "B" on the shutter speed dial), the shutter should remain open for as long as you hold the shutter release button.
You should also test the meter's response to light, the motion of the mirror, the viewfinder display area, the rewind knob, flash ports, etc. Also check the light seals to see if they're in need of replacement.
This is just to test to see if the camera is working as it should though; you won't know if it's working properly until you run a roll of film through the camera.
