How do I use my sony alpha 100 DSLR Camera take photos in a cave?
I'm going to Mammoth Cave and want a heads up on any ideas for Settings that would be successful for cave photos. I'm quite the newb when it comes to my camera skills but I know the basics. Anyone a pro here?
Low light will be your problem as will the colour balance of any illumination in the cave.
Decades ago I shot the images for the Speedwell Cavern in Castleton here in the UK, which they are still using, for those shots I used loads of flash.
You'll be surprised at how long a shutter speed you need in very low light conditions, put your camera on a tripod, choose Aperture Priority, set the aperture as wide as it will go (lowest f number), half press the shutter and your camera will tell you the shutter speed it needs to set for the light available. It may well flash 30' at you which means that even the maximum of 30 seconds is not enough. Raise the ISO and keep taking readings (half press the shutter) till the the 30' stops flashing and shows a shutter speed less than 30. Now you can take a properly exposed image, but it will be noisy.
By using flash you can shoot at faster shutter speeds at a lower ISO and a smaller aperture and avoid noise, but you will probably need more power than your 'pop up' flash can muster.
