Tips on photographing an indoor birthday party?
I'm photographing my grandfather's birthday tonight. It's a small affair with family and a few friends in our house. The lights are yellow, but a pale yellow. My mom is nitpicking on the colors, she said she wanted them bright and happy. The lighting of the room is rather moody, and she wants bright, happy pictures not necessarily faithful to the lighting of the room but still makes colors pop. Does that make sense? o.o
I have a Nikon D3000, an SB-600 speedlight, the 18-55mm AF-S VR kit lens and a 50mm f1.8D. Though I don't think I'll be using the prime lens tonight, I'll need the autofocus from the kit lens. It seems to suffice for the purpose anyway.
I need suggestions on flash and camera settings to achieve the desired effect of "happy" pictures, bright colors and skintones, etc. Thanks! ![]()
I'm comfortable with using manual mode.
You have the right equipment, although you will probably want to add a Gary Fong flash diffuser.
Unless the 50 mm f/1.8 is an AF-S lens, you will have to manually focus the lens. Be sure you have this process perfectly mastered
Be sure to do some tests before the actual party to get your exposure perfect.
