Canon EF-S 17-85mm vs 18-55mm IS kit lens?
I'm planning to purchase the new Canon Rebel XSi. I'm a little mixed of which lens to purchase.
The 17-85mm offers USM, full-time manual focus, better build quality, wider and higher zoom.
The 18-55mm IS kit lens is lighter, has a 4-stop image stabilizer (versus the 3 stop on the 17-85), faster (f/3.5 versus f/4) and is newer. It doesn't have USM, full-time manual focus, narrower and lower zoom, and cheap build quality.
Many people and reviews say that this lens is superior in image quality, surpassing the 17-85.
The 17-85 suffers from vignetting and fringing and softness at lower f-stops.
Price-wise, I will be paying $200-300 more for the 17-85.
As you have stated, they are different lenses used for different subjects and shooting styles.
I find it hard to believe that any fringing, softness and vignetting are going to be noticeable under live, pro shooting conditions. When you say softness at lower f/stops do you mean at f/stops like f/16 or f/22? If that is the case, ALL lenses have this happen at smaller f/stops ... it is called diffraction and is causes by the light reflecting off the blades of the aperture leaves.

The IS is an important factor in shooting hand held .. especially at longer focal lengths.
USM is what Canon calls their very quiet motor in their auto-focus lenses.
You will notice that the 17-85mm also has IS, so that is a wash.

There really is no "cheap build" Canon lens .. nor Nikon, nor Leitz ... some are just much more expensive than others. Cheap is in the realm of Tamron and Sigma.
Picking a lens based upon scientific tests in the lab, while an indicator really has no resemblance to how a lens performs in a day to day professional environment. How long a lens is still a viable tool after 30 years of professional use is the real measure of a lens ... thus far, Nikon, Canon and Leitz had proved they can go the distance.
