I have a Canon Xti and just got back from Japan with mediocre pictures, help?
I'm kind of disappointed. I spent all this money on the camera and honestly my pictures look the same as they would have with a regular point and shoot digital camera. I actually think a point and shoot would have been a little better in some circumstances. I took about 1400 pictures in Japan and only about 400 are good, some are ok, but a lot are blurry. Granted some of the pictures look pretty good and I shot some in RAW, which I might not have been able to do with a point and shoot. Also, I had a circular polarizing filter on the lens which got stuck and which I still can't get off. I think this made a lot of the pictures darker than they should have been. I have the standard 18-55mm lens (I know its not the greatest), but still am wondering why my pics are so sub-par. What lens should I get to replace the one I have? I want a good, all-purpose lens. If I spent this much money, a little more isn't a big deal. Please help, this really made me mad.
Before you give the XTi away or trade it for a point and shoot there are a couple of questions we need to ask:
* how much experience did you have using 35mm SLR cameras before you bought the Canon?
* how much time did you spend using the camera before you went on your trip?
Trouble shooting your issues.
* if you are using your meter correctly, the polarizer will not make your photos darker ... just a bluer sky.
* blurry shots have to do with the shutter speed of the camera when you are shooting hand held (having your polarizing lens stuck on the lens will reduce your shutter speed about 1 - 1/2 stops)
* The Canon "standard" 18-55mm lens is a great lens. Your problem images are not because of the lens you are using and is a great general, all-purpose lens.
