Comparing these two filters for my Canon lens: (58mm Hoya or 58mm B+H)?
58mm Hoya HMC Super Multi-coated Filter UV(0)....OR....B+W 58mm UV Haze MRC 010 F-Pro Filter. Both about the same price. Any difference in performance or optics? thnx
Both are considered high quality filters. I happen to use the Hoya Super HMC filters on all my lenses. That's not saying the Hoya is better, it's just want I use. What I can offer is the process by which I picked my filters.
My camera shop guy, a semi-pro photographer who happens to be a police officer and crime scene photographer, laid a bunch of different filters out on a sheet of pure white paper. He didn't tell me anything about brands or prices, he just told me to pick the filters that appeared to cause the least change in color relative to the white sheet of paper on which they were laying. I ended up picking the two different kinds of Hoya filters, plus a B+W filter and a Heliopan filter.
The next step was to decide which of the three appeared to show the least or darkest reflection of overhead lights. I ended up narrowing things down to the B+W and the Hoya Super HMC filters I use today. Between those, the Hoya appeared to show the least reflection by a hair. If I looked at them again today, I'd probably be just as likely to pick the B+W filters. At anyrate, once I made my choice, the photographer told that I should then consider using that same filter on all my Canon lenses first as a protective barrier for the lenses and two, to provide consistency with respect to white balance/color temperature rather than having different filters that cast different colors on every lens.
This may be more important with film than digital but, I get the idea that it's one less thing to have to correct later. Looking at the guy's portfolio, I have no reason to doubt he knows what he's talking about. I've followed his advice ever since. Strangely enough, this all happend when I was buying my first DSLR. He'd been telling me to buy Nikon but when he suggested that I consider the fact several friends with huge lens collections were shooting Canon, I ended up with a Canon 40D instead of the Nikon D300 toward which he'd been steering me.
