Pls detail the difference 'tween a HOYA Super HMC Pro 1 Multi-coated 58mm filter and a Tiffen 58mm UV filter?
two filters:
HOYA Super HMC Pro 1 Multi-coated 58mm UV (0) filter
Tiffen 58mm UV filter
I bought both, I have a XSi with both the kit lens and a F 50mm f/1.4 and was looking for some filters. I was able to pick up the Tiffen at a third of the cost ofnthe Hoya (i bought both). Functionality wise, in respect to protection and IQ, is there that much of a difference? (justified by $$). I'm not sure if the Tiffen has multi-coating and to what extent thats important. Thnx in advance, just looking for a "Readers Digest Condensed version" of the difference between the two filters. Both are recognizable brand names, I know. Thnx
The Hoya says "multi-coated" and the Tiffin does not. Insofar as what they will do, there will not be enough difference between them to matter. You would do yourself a favor and find out what multi-coating really is and what it does. Multi coating on the filter will make little or no difference at all. Using a naive example, what multi coating does is to stop light bounce around in air/glass chambers in the lens. That results in a higher definition, better contrast (blacks will be blacker and whites whiter, for instance). That is much easier to see if you take an SMPTE test slide, which you can purchase fromvarious sources, and project it on a screen with a Kodak slide projector. To make a comparison, for instance, you can use the standard Flat Field Kodak 4 inch projection lens (made of plastic and not coated) and compare it to a 100mm Schneider multi coated projection lens. You will see less color fringing from the Schneider, better contrast with the Schneider, and better corner to corner resolution with the Schneider.
While representing Schneider in the days of multi-image projector shows, I sold a lot of lenses based on tests just like that. So I think I could say that if you reversed the process, used uncoated or single coated taking lenses and compared the end product with high quality multi coated taking lense, you would see the same things.
So in my estimation, if you look to purchase filters that are multi coated and cost far more, you are throwing away a bunch of money. Just stick with brand names, and Tiffen is a very good one.
