HELP!!!! Not a professional photographer but shooting a wedding SATURDAY?
My very good friend from high school is getting married on Saturday. Her photographer bailed on her last minute and riped her off (another story not what my question is about)
She knows that I LOVE taking photos and I guess I would consider myself okay for an amateur but she has asked me to take the photos for her wedding.
HELP ME PLEASE!!! SIMPLE TIPS PLEASE. If you are using words I may not know please explain what they mean and how to do them on my camera.
Equipment I have. Canon xti
Tamron 70-300 mm 1:4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1:2) ..I'm reading this off the lens
Canon 50mm f/1.4
also the kit lens
OUTSIDE WEDDING 5 PM. TENTED RECEPTION TO FOLLOW.
any help would be so greatly appreciated.. please don't criticise me for going over my head.... I know this. Will chose best answer.
pre-planning is your friend!
Make a list of shots that your friend feels she MUST have - bride dressing, groom dressing, bride and groom at the altar, entire wedding party... etc. keep the list with you, make sure you get all those shots, and then try to have fun once those shots are done, and get some good candids (those often turn out to be favorites) Take multiple shots of groups, since there's usually at least one person blinking in at least one shot.
Make sure you have fully charged batteries (and spares), and sufficient memory card space (2-4g should be plenty, and if you have a lot of space, err on the side of taking too many pics, you can always delete the ones you don't like.)
Your camera will be plenty sufficient - I'd recommend the kit lens for candids (since you can zoom with it), and the 50mm for portraits, since it's a better lens, and it's also better for low light. You can probably leave the 70-300 at home, but who knows, you might want to bring it just in case.
if you have the funding, there are two things I'd recommend:
1. 28-105 f/4.0-5.6 USM lens - should be around $200-220 at B&H, J&R, and Adorama... if for some reason you have loads of money to spend, I can recommend a better lens, but that one's a GREAT bang for your buck, and you'll use it a LOT.
2. a speedlite - the flash upgrade will make a HUGE difference (it's part of what makes professional photos look professional), and you can get a lower end canon speedlite (the 220EX) for $125 (though I'd recommend the next level up) - again, a good investment if you love taking photos ![]()
Go to your local camera shop and see what they have.
Most importantly - try to enjoy yourself! Your friend is lucky to have you to bail her out, and you'll do just fine... make sure you have business cards just in case - you might get some more photo gigs!
Good luck!
Edit:
a few people mentioned wearing comfortable clothes/shoes and making sure you eat - I ABSOLUTELY agree!
Clothes/Shoes: I usually wear pants when I shoot, because I'm always crouching and moving around a lot, and I'd end up flashing people and/or tripping over myself if I were wearing a skirt.
I wear comfy flat shoes - I recommend Safe-T-Step or some kind of shoe meant for people who work on their feet - non-skid (this can be important!), durable, and they come in several styles. It also feels REALLY nice to have a fresh pair of shoes to slip into at the end of the day/night.
Eating: see if you can get a plate set aside for you if you're not able to sit down and eat with the guests... you might want to bring a protein bar or other snack in your camera bag, just in case... and make sure you stay hydrated
