HDRXR520V accessory questions?
I am checking out sonystyles.com and see some equipment. I just bought a mic ECM-HGZ1 and it was total crap. Distorted the sound, didn't capture audio in the positions it was supposed to, acted very much like the regular 5.1 built into the camera. So now I am worried about any other accessories I could get. Have you had any experience with these devices and do you think it is worth the purchases? Video reviews would be a plus, the few I found gave very crummy examples, if any at all. Also, do you know of a microphone that I can hold in my hand (wireless or not is fine) and plug into this kind of camera? The blue tooth one I have listed may not capture interview audio.

"Distorted the sound" tells me the audio was REALLY loud - and what recorded sounded very muffled/muddy - and maybe had static. This is because the recording depended on the camcorder's auto audio-gain. Using a mic by itself - whether internal or external will not fix this.

The Sony HDR-XR520V has a very basic audio control setting under "MicRefLevel" in the menu. Normal for most stuff, but for really loud audio, flip that selection to Low. This kicks in an attenuator so the loud audio does not overwhelm the auto mic gain... See page 107.
I have and use the same wide angle and tele lenses for my HDR-HC1. They are fine.
I do not use BlueTooth for wireless mics - I use Sennheiser EW100 series lavalieres. Handheld mics? The cable gets long so you should use shielded cable and that will wind you back to XLR connectors - so an XLR adapter (juicedLink or BeachTek) would be appropriate. The mic jack location is on page 8, item 13. This is a stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) plug.
I used to use filters - have not used them for a couple of years.
You do not have to buy Sony branded stuff. But you do need to be careful because Sony can paint you into a proprietary corner - the trick is to get stuff that can be used with other equipment in the future. (I typically use the HC1 and a HDR-FX1.)
