Ttl Flash Sync

Can a Nikon D40 be used to trigger studio flash units?
I have a Nikon D40 and want to use it in a Club night at a local pro studio. The manual keeps going on about speedlights and ttl flash metering etc, but I need to turn all this off, stick a sync lead in the hotshoe and just have the camera trigger the flash and then control the exposure using the flash's controls. I cannot see any way of doing this.
Do you know if it is possible, if so how to do it?
The studio has all the flash equipment, brollies, diffusers, etc etc. All I want to do is be able to trigger it - simple "FLASH NOW" not "Flash now for 300msecs at 1.2 power with 2 pre flashes". If I buy remote commander units then I have no guarantee they would be compatible with the studio's equipment.... not so simples!
Thanks fhotoace, but do you know where/what to set the Nikon D40 to? It has two settings: ttl and Manual - the manual has several subsettings of full power, and then fractions. I guess to set it to full power manual and then use their adapter?
You can buy trigger units that plug in your hot-shoe, and remote slave flashes that are triggered by the trigger unit.
Simples!
