car radio installation?
i need to install a jvc kd-s5050 radio into a o1 ford ranger. the problem is that all of the wires coming from the truck and from the radio are all cut. i have the battery, the ground, and the hot wire hooked up. the only problem i have is that i can't figure out what color wires connect to what to get the speakers working. i've been trying to get the answer to this question for two months. please help a this texan finally get the answer i've been looking for!!!!!!
Radio unit
Green & green/black - right rear speaker
Purple & purple/black - left rear speaker
White & white/black - right front speaker
Grey & grey/black - left front speaker
Black - earth
Red - switched feed
Yellow - permanant feed
Orange - illumination feed
Blue - aerial control output
That was the easy bit.
Now the car
Hopefully you can identify the power feeds with a test lamp or voltmeter. Also the earth can be picked out quite easily.
Now the speakers. The first thing is to try and see the colour of the wires going to the speakers. You may be able to pick these up where they go through the door cable grumets.
If you are finding this difficult - try this, its works and it is safe.
Get a 1.5 volt torch battery. Slightly bare back all the speaker wires you have in the hole where the radio goes.
Take one of the speaker wires and hold it to the bottom (negative) on the torch battery. Now take the other wires one at a time and touch it on and off to the top (posative) of the torch battery.
When you hear a speaker click you have found the two wires to that speaker. Listen carefully and mark the wires with the location of the speaker (eg front right).
Put these two wires to one side and start again with another wire to the bottom of the torch battery - and so on.
Hopefully you will be able to identify all the speaker wires in this manner.
I actually have a torch battery with wires soldered to the top and bottom that I regulary use for this test.
The only thing you will not be able to identify is which speaker wire is posative and which speaker wire is negative. This does not really matter unless you are very critical.
Hope this helps - Best of Luck
