Why is there a dialing sound at the beginning of some Video Cassette Tapes?
It sounds like it's dialing a ten digit number at the very beginning before anything is displayed. I notice it more on Disney movies. What is it?
Quality control code. Factory thing, not really anything I know that sets the VCR up.
If you have older Capitol-EMI audio cassettes, especially the ones with the "XDR" Expanded Dynamic Range logo, you've probably noticed a swept series of tones (later on followed by a set of calliope-like tones after the end of side two). I often get the feeling maybe they recorded tapes in a big pancake reel and the tones were to tell the machine where to cut and load a new cassette. This makes more sense for audio cassettes and videocassettes are simply bought in standard times/lengths and batch duplicated.
Prerecorded VHS tapes are on the way out like the 8-tracks of old and audio cassettes of recent.
