What does ultraviolet light look like to the human eye? judy b please answer?
I'm looking for 3 things.
1. What would it look like IF we could see it?? Would it be a bright violet?
2.What does it look like to a normal eye?
3.Can you get eye surgery to remove the lens and put an artificial lens in soyou can see ultraviolet light?
THE RETINA CAN PICK UP ULTRAVIOLET BECAUSE THE LENS IN THE EYE FILTERS OUT UV PEOPLE WITHOUT UV PROTECTION IN THERE EYE ARE APHAKIA WHICH MEANS THEY HAVE LENS IN THERE EYE DUE TO SURGICAL REMOVAL. JUDY B YES WE DO PICKUP UV, ITS JUST THE LENS FILTERS IT OUT STUPID
Nice move, calling the person you want to answer stupid -- really makes me want to help you out.
Maybe you should consult an eye physiology textbook before typing in capital letters your ideas about how the retina works. Shouting out wrong information certainly makes you look stupid.
Light sensitive pigments in the rods and cones of the retina detect light. These pigments do not respond to UV light. The retina cannot detect UV light, even if the lens is removed. Prior to 1980, all cataract patients had their lenses removed and not replaced. They were still unable to see UV light after surgery.
Check the link below for the spectral sensitivity of the four pigments found in the retina. You will note that the cones do not respond to wavelengths below 370nm. This is the limit of violet light.
Although UV is sometimes defined as below 400nm, most UV is below 350.
Rods may detect some UVA light, down to about 350. Since the brain sensation of colour depends on the input from cones and rod input supplies only dark/light input, if rods did detect some UV then it would appear with no colour only as a shade of grey.
