What are some photo tips for a one day helicopter and land tour of the Grand Canyon?
I'm going on a trip to Las Vegas and a one day helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon iin April which I understand includes some land and water excursions. Here's what I have to work with: a Canon 35mm EF camera w/ a Canon 50mm f1.4 lens & polarizing filter, a Canon 24mm f2.8 lens, a Vivitar Series 1 35-85mm zoom lens and a Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm zoom lens & polarizer. I also have a Canon Power Shot A80 digital camera. Since this a rare experience for me I want to get some good shots and I'm concerned about how much equipment I'll really need and don't need in order to keep all the cumbersome fumbling to a minimum. I'd really appreciate any advice a pro can give me especially regarding film types, settings, and other practical matters. I don't know if tripods are provided or not. Thanks for your help.
Photography during a trip is tricky. Practice at home getting good shots of moving targets and quick response to those good shots. I practiced for 2 weeks on my dogs. This will help you more than you know. The way to get the professional results you want is to photograph from a fixed spot and take your time to plan what you want. A bean bag, such as a bag of dry beans from the grocery store is a great idea, or hold your camera against a post with the timer on. Make it a habit to hold your breath and press the shutter without moving the camera-most people do not do this.
A helicopter will have a lot of vibration, and I doubt your film camera will help you. But the digital camera would be great. A digital camera has the anti-shake button. BTW, when I'm on a trip, and I give my camera to someone to take a picture of me, I leave it on the anti-shake option, so I'll get a decent photo. Then, of course, tell the other person you want TWO photos with you in it, in case you have your eyes closed at that second.
Be sure to take a lot of memory for your digital camera. Replace the memory card each day, just in case something gets lost or stolen.
It sounds counter-intuitive, but the photos you will really treasure are the ones with people in them. The landscape photos, unless you're a professional, tend to be ignored after a time.
Read photo books about "perspective." Very helpful. You really cannot take a landscape photo that will adequately do your subject justice. Nearly everyone tries to get too much into the photo. There are also photo books on taking landscape photos that will help you.
The one photo I did not get: a paw print outside of the south rim gift shop. There were wild animal prints displayed in the gift shop/restaurant area. I had seen a real mountain lion/cougar paw print!
