Difference Between Macro and Wide-Angle Lenses?
Please show me a comparison. And if I´m an amateur going underwater to photograph )while snorkeling) which is better for me??
A Macro lens allows you to focus in to an object which is very close to the camera. They are usually a standard or short-telephoto lens - such as 100mm on a 35mm camera - but you can also get wide-angle macros. Many zoom lenses also have a macro setting.
A wide-angle is one that shows a wider view than the human eye normally takes in. This equates to a lens of less than 35mm on a 35mm camera. If you go too wide (less than about 18mm), though, you get distortion - some lenses deliberately achieve this too get weird views; these are called fish-eye or semi-fisheye lenses.
Anyway, as far as your snorkelling trip is concerned, a wide-angle will definitely be useful, a macro will be handy if you're going to get within a foot or two of your subject - but much more important is the housing; water kills cameras, especially digital ones, in an instant. It's no good just sticking your camera in a plastic bag - the combination of the moisture and pressure will make sure you don't get any pictures - ever again from that camera. If this is just a one-off trip, buy a disposable underwater camera - it's a lot cheaper than a new camera!
