Is the amount of light coming in through a wide angle lens more than the amount of light entering a telephoto?
I do understand the differences between a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens and I know that light entering the lens is controlled by the aperture. What I need to know is whether the amount of light hitting the lens is more in a wide angle as compared to a telephoto. Thanks.

The amount of light entering a wide angle lens at f/2.8 is EXACTLY the same as the light entering a 400 mm f/2.8 telephoto.
What is different is of course the field of view.
I think what is confusing you is the surface of the lens. The surface on the front element has to do with the design of the lens.
Take a look at some lenses. The front element on the 400 mm f/2.8 is HUGE. The 20 mm f/2.8 front element is much smaller.
