There's a few questions you should ask yourself before purchasing.

The main one is

Do you want to edit the footage?

I always edit everything that I shoot, and obviously if you want to do anything at all to the original footage (change the colours, or make ANY cuts, or replace the audio track, etc, etc) you're going to need to edit.

This is not a good camera for editing as it records straight onto DVD discs.

It's not a bad idea to look on ebay for a reputable seller trying to get rid of a good camcorder; as they will generally last a long time if well looked after.

MiniDV remains a standard format (digital tape) for editing your footage.
Shoot, connect to computer, play the tape through while "capturing" on the computer, and edit in one of many, many programs (including iMovie or Windows Movie Maker) which come with Mac/Windows.
