Is it possible to get an SLR with a lens that can do Tele and Wide Shots?
I don't want to carry around 500 lens!!
And who makes the best SLRS and Lens?
Most camera brands now have "superzooms" that cover a wide range and prevent you from changing lenses all the time.
Specially designed for digital SLRs:
- Nikon 18-200 VR
- Sigma 18-125 and 18-200
- Tamron 18-200
General design:
- Canon 28-135 and 28-200
- Nikon 28-200
- Tamron 24-135, 28-200 and 28-300
- Sigma 28-200 and 28-300
- Canon 28-300 L USM IS (pricey)
- Sigma 50-500 (so heavy it is sometimes called "Bigma")
There are generally drawbacks using these lenses, mostly because their design is optically very demanding. It is far simpler to manufacture a very good (and cheap) 50mm than an average 28-300.
The main defaults are:
- huge barrel distorsion at the wide end. Distorsion at the tele end is generally better
- average sharpness especially at the wide end, wide open (this is not the case for the higher end ones that have top glass)
- Rather slow lenses. Aperture typically range from f/3.5 or f/4 to f/5.6 or f/6.3.
I have used such lenses and then switched to a combo of :
- wide zoom (17-40, but there are heaps of choice starting at 17 or 18mm either for digital or analog cameras)
- tele zoom (70-200)
I also use a fixed 50mm to fill the gap in between them.
I have chosen high quality lenses and this combo works fairly well as it is logical: you either want to shoot wide or long views and choose either lens to do so.
I believe this is the kind of combo used on location by many photographers (who use two bodies to avoid changing lenses).
